So why is the NFB of Tennessee naming the scholarship after Lev Williams?
In 1958, as a 21-year old student, Lev Williams was the victim of a freak
accident. He and some friends were walking on campus at night when an
unknown assailant fired a shotgun into the group. He was hit in the face
and later became totally blind because of the injury. He probably would
have been able to see out of one eye afterwards, but Lev was so determined
to get back into school, that the strain caused the one good eye to fail. **
**

** **

In 1962, he completed requirements for a B.S. degree from Tennessee State
University and went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Psychology from
Washington University. He was hired as a teacher in Memphis City Schools
in 1965 and within several years became the supervisor of the city’s
Visually Limited Program, teaching the blind children of Memphis, and
leading the program into national recognition until retirement in 1998. He
was also active in the Memphis Federation of the Blind for nearly fifty
years before passing away in June of 2013. ****

Lev was a real example of what it truly means to have vision. Please help
us to carry on his legacy of achievement by****

donating <http://www.nfb-tn.org/donations/> to the ****

Lev Williams Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships to several
deserving blind Tennessee college students each year. Not only will it
allow us to give monetary assistance to blind students, but it will also
allow successfully employed blind people to connect with students and
become valuable mentors. With your support, those of us who are employed
would like to pass the knowledge of how to be blind and have a viable
career down to the next generation. For further information, please

Biographies:****

Davis Coen: is a contemporary country-blues musician who’s recent
accomplishments have included featured music on Dan Aykroyd’s ‘House Of
Blues Radio Hour’ and NPR’s ‘Morning Edition’ and ‘World Cafe’ programs.
Also his music appears on the DVD release of Martin Scorsese’s PBS special
‘The Blues’; and on the DVD documentary about the music of the late-great
Hillcountry Mississippi blues matriarch Jesse Mae Hemphill, titled ‘Dare
You To Do It Again’. Other films with Coen’s music include “Fresh Cut
Grass” (2004) and “Mental Scars” (2009).****

Coen has been touring the U.S. since his teens, either as a solo guitar and
vocal act, or commonly accompanied by bass and drums in trio line-up. He
commonly appears at clubs, bars, and festivals throughout the Southeast and
mid-south. He has also enjoyed a dozen tours of Europe, promoting eight
album releases. He has shared a bill or opened for many of the classic
blues artists who influenced his music; including James Cotton, Junior
Wells, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Koko Taylor, Big Jack Johnson, T-Model
Ford, and David “Honeyboy” Edwards. He has also shared bills with such
non-blues performers as Richie Havens, Mountain, Eric Burdon, Tito Puente
and Toots & The Maytals.****

These past few years Davis has focused on clean-up kickoffs on coastal
Mississippi for Katrina victims; performing before mayors of several
cities. He was honored with an achievement award for his conglomerate MS
Coast relief efforts.****

Duwayne Burnside -
Guitarist, singer, and songwriter Duwayne Burnside is one of 14 children
born to legendary North Mississippi musician R.L. Burnside and his wife,
Alice. He has been a frequent performer with the North Mississippi Allstars
since the early 1990s, when that group, fronted by Luther and Cody
Dickinson, formed. The young Burnside learned his first few guitar licks
and chords from his father, but proved a quick study and soon began playing
with local club owner Junior Kimbrough and the Soul Blues Boys. Growing up
in Holly Springs, he was close to Memphis, and as soon as he was able to
get to Memphis, he did, and soon had the chance to sit in with Little Jimmy
King, Albert King, B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and others. Duwayne also
began playing in his Dad’s band, Sound Machine Groove, where he further
honed his skills as a guitarist and showman. He recorded for Hightone and
Fat Possum Records with his father’s group before moving to Memphis, where
he opened his own club, Burnside Kitchen and Grill, near Highway 61. He
booked the music, cooked the food, sold the beer, and had his own band
perform there on a weekly basis.****

Live at the Mint [Lucky 13]
In 1998, Duwayne traveled to Los Angeles to record his first album, Live at
the Mint, as Duwayne Burnside & the Mississippi Mafia. After returning to
Memphis, he decided to take a break from the bar business and settled back
home in Holly Springs. In 2001, he joined the North Mississippi Allstars
on-stage for the first time in Birmingham, Alabama, and that led to
incessant touring with the band. He recorded with them on their third
album, Polaris, and is featured on two of the group’s EP’s. In 2004, he
opened another version of the Burnside Blues Cafe in Holly Springs and
formed a new band that fused soul blues with hill country blues. His albums
under his own name include Live at the Mint (1998) and Under Pressure
(2005), both for B.C. Records. An album celebrating his father’s life and
music remains in the works. One of the last things he asked his father to
do — R.L. Burnside passed at age 80 in 2005 — was sing with him at the
massive, popular Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. Burnside continues to
tour, helping to keep the North County, Mississippi hill-style blues
flourishing.****

Blind Mississippi Morris – Blind Mississippi Morris (born Morris Cummings,
April 6, 1955, Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States) is an American blues
artist.1<http://newbysmemphis.com/calendar/110213-blind-mississippi-morris-duwanye-burnside-and-davis-coen-braille-blues-and-bar-be-cue-benefit-concert/#fn341843965252a7c9acd90>
****

Cummings lost his sight at the age of four, but that did not stop him from
learning the blues. Morris has become a popular blues act on Beale Street.
Morris and his band, the Pocket Rockets, are known as the “real deal from
Beale”. Morris has a talented lineage. His cousins, Robert and Mary Diggs,
led the Memphis Sheiks, and his aunt, Mary Tanner, played with the Harps of
Melody. Morris is also a cousin of the late Willie Dixon.****

Morris is the very embodiment of the Delta bluesman. He has been called a
new disciple of the Delta blues, he was rated one of the 10 best harmonica
players in the world by Bluzharp magazine. He has performed with musicians
such as B. B. King, Rufus Thomas, Muddy Waters, David Porter and many other
Memphis, Tennessee artists.****
