A map works best for me if it uses a variety of textures to represent different things. I once looked at a map of Washington, DC, produced by APH, and they used the same smooth lines to represent streets, the edges of squares, the outlines of buildings, and even the lines that connected symbols on the key to the places they represented. The O&M told her to put in all the detail she could. An artist in her spare time who loved detail in her work, that’s what she did. I found it overwhelming in terms of information.
