Job Description:



The Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) is seeking driven, physically active applicants for a position that will promote IDB's mission, vision and values each day through providing a welcoming clean, safe and functional environment for all guests, clients, students and staff.  Strong candidates value and enjoy the labor of creating hospitality daily while cleaning this 6-story treasure that is on the National Historic Registry. They will be adept problem-solvers who take initiative to get the right work done when no one is looking, both independently and collaborating as a team.

Duties and responsibilities to include the following:

  *   Demonstrates a passion for cleanliness or creating a safe and hospitable environment for staff, visitors and students.
  *   Works independently with initiative, effectively as a team member, noticing needs and cross-training to complete any custodial worker function as needed.
  *   Sweeps, dusts, and wet mops floors and stairs; strips, waxes, buffs, and reseals floors, using brooms, dust mops, vacuums, wet mops, and floor machines, and routinely cleans equipment and changes belts, bags, and other replaceable parts before they damage surfaces or equipment.
  *   Vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans carpets and rugs, using a vacuum cleaner, rug shampooing machine, brush or cloth, and cleaning solutions.
  *   Cleans mirrors, lavatories, toilets, bath and locker facilities, using cleansers and sanitizing solutions safely and according to manufacturer instructions, brushes, cloths, and squeegees.
  *   Deep cleans on a regular schedule and as needed.
  *   Refills paper towels, toilet feminine container linings; refills soaps, sanitizers and disinfectants and wipes throughout the building.
  *   Disposes of waste paper and other discards; collects and places trash in an incinerator or trash pick-up area.
  *   Dusts, cleans, and polishes furniture, counters, shelving, window/door ledges and casings, using cloths and cleaning/polishing solutions.
  *   Dusts, wet mops and washes walls, ceilings, vents, cabinets and partitions, using wall brushes, wet mops, cloths, and cleaning solutions.
  *   Makes minor repairs to secure table legs; replace handles, knobs, fuses, light bulbs, and similar items; tightens screws, replaces nails, and performs related tasks.
  *   Transfers furniture, lamps, accessories, and equipment to clear areas for cleaning, set-up, and redecorating work by lifting and carrying light to heavy objects.
  *   Makes safety checks by doing building rounds, looking for any unauthorized personnel, and observing and checking locked doors, temperature readings for heating and air conditioning, and on/off switches for machines.
  *   Notifies appropriate staff of any problems that arise with orientation students.
  *   Sweeps and removes snow from steps and sidewalks immediately adjacent to assigned buildings, using brooms, snow shovels, and powered snow removal equipment; occasionally rakes leaves.
  *   Other duties as assigned, including using electronic means, including a computer to complete time cards, read and write emails
  *   Documents work digitally or with paper in handwriting or Braille as assigned.
  *   Communicate with other employees through email, cellular phone and text functions.


Essential functions of this position:

  *   Displays high standards of ethical conduct.  Exhibits honesty and integrity.  Refrains from theft-related, dishonest or unethical behavior.
  *   Demonstrates initiative and independence, observes levels of cleanliness and condition of furnishings and decor in detail.
  *   Operates digital/electronic devices including a computer to complete simple forms, click on links; read and write basic emails; operates a cellular/mobile phone, including functions of voice mail, writing basic texts and reading texts.
  *   Communicates needs and status of work to others verbally and in a permanent media (digital and paper)
  *   Safely performs duties according to industry best practices and equipment and product instructions; understands associated instructions, Safety Data Sheet material and verbal and digital Braille or written work instructions.
  *   Aligns behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of the organization.
  *   Responds appropriately to supervision.  Makes an effort to follow policy and cooperate with supervisors.
  *   Effectively works and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner.  Committed to quality service.
  *   Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and group identity.  Fosters commitment and team spirit.
  *   Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information.  Listens to others and responds appropriately.
  *   Demonstrate successful performance throughout the probationary period.


It is the policy of the Department for the Blind to conduct background checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of employment.



Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from high school or HSED (GED).
2) A total of one year of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where one year of full-time experience in commercial building maintenance or housekeeping equals one year of education (maximum of four years).
