On this lovely October afternoon, I would like to take a little time to tell you about Coffee, Guide Dogs, and Donuts. We met this morning at 9:00 a.m. Becky Young, Scott Van Gorp, and I were present from Iowa. Besides Stacie Gallegos, secretary of NAGDU, and a brief apearance by NAGDU?s president, Raul Gallegos, we had guests from the Boston area and from New Hampshire. We discussed some of the problems people have faced here, and we discussed some ways they have been dealt with. Becky talked about educating a driver concerning his fear of dogs, and Stacie talked about having had the same experience. Although this might not always work, we might want to consider trying it should we nbe able to get into the car in the first place. We discussed the problem of business owners? fears of evicting a dog from the premises whether a guide or some other dog. We need to educate business owners, so to do that we will consider having an open house of some kind to talk with them about our rights and theirs. Often law enforcement (first responders) do not know what the rules are regarding service animals. We determined that we should get some brochures from the Independence Market and offer them to folks whom we are trying to educate. Scott will be visiting with someone from law enforcement who he knows from church to see how we can implement this. Stacie said to visit with them and bring food is appreciated. We deermined that perhaps we will want to set a meeting time but maybe not monthly. We decided January after the holidays would be a good time, so Stacie will get back to us about possible dates. I felt hopeful about the meeting, and look forward to our moving forward in our endeavors to make life for our guide dog teams more enjoyable. If you all want to help, please contact me at cindayray at gmail.com and we will keep in touch. Message-ID: Greetings colleagues, Back in the old days there was a specialized slate one could get for brailling playing cards, such as the standard 54 card bicycle deck you can buy at any general merchandise imporium. I used to have one but cannot locate it these days. My mother says she thinks she still has it, but it is so far not findable. It's become imperative that I either find that one, or a replacement, and it seems that Independence market doesn't carry them, nor does anyone else I've found. It's become an imperative to find one, because I'm a serious cribbage player, and i like to start with a new deck every so often, and wintertime seems to be card playing season for me. So, recently when making an order from Independence market i asked for two decks of the Bicycle playing cards. Instead of Bicycles I get these plastic playing cards, and although the braille probably holds up very well on them, they're really unsuitable as playing cards. In other words, new and improved ain't improvement in this case. So, I have to find one of those card slates to be able to braille playing cards iwthout defacing them or damaging them, and those card slates were just perfect for doing that. Anyone know of sources for them? You might ask around to see if they still make them. That works just fine for me to braille my own cards. Yep, that would work great! I had that tool, until my after Katrina fire. The ubiquitous 3 x 5 file card was my default for notetaking with one of those for many years. I'll do some checking, or if anybody knows where those can be found please post, if all else privately to this email. > Regards, Richard From svangorp at nfbi.org Tue Oct 18 23:11:01 2022 From: svangorp at nfbi.org (Scott Van Gorp) Date: Tue, 18 Oct 2022 18:11:01 -0500 Subject: [Tall-Corn] Chapter meetings for this week Message-ID: <00c101d8e346$e3f91f40$abeb5dc0$@nfbi.org> Good Evening Federation Family: Below is the Zoom information for the At Large an Siouxland chapter meetings for this week on Thursday and Saturday. I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity to share with NFB members. Please let me know if you have any questions! This is a new non-profit that Niah Howard and I have started, and we are excited to pilot the trip described below. Inclusive Learning Solutions is excited to host a program designed to provide blindness skills training in an international and cross cultural context for blind adults! Students are invited to participate in this 6 day trip to M?rida, Mexico. While in Mexico, students will participate in experiences that promote skills of independent travel, self-advocacy, and job readiness. Students will visit archaeological sites, go to the beach, and take a tour of the city of M?rida. While participating in these experiential activities, students will build their Orientation and Mobility (O & M) skills and confidence while trying new things. Students will also work on cooking skills while preparing an authentic Yucatecan meal and shopping for ingredients at the market. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to network with local blind students, learn basic Spanish, and advocate for their wants and needs in various contexts. This trip is designed to build confidence and skills while simultaneously showing students what is truly possible.
