I am sad to report that long time member Nyla Wisecup passed away
peacefully at the age of 95 on Friday evening. She became a member of the
NFB in 1964, attending her first convention in Phoenix, Arizona. She loved
to tell the story of her trip to Phoenix in Dr. Jernigan's car with James
Valliant at the wheel. It was a close call to be sure, but they arrived
safely, and this began a long devotion to the Federation.
Nyla came from a large farm family, and her cooking was simply wonderful.
She baked a lot of cookies for legislative events, and played a large part
in planning some of them.
Nyla wanted to come to the state convention this past fall, and we were
able to help her do so. She was thrilled to visit with old friends. Some of
us had known her back in 1964. (I was a student with her at the
Commission.) She loved attending conventions, and I don't think she missed
many. I think the pandemic restrictions made it hard for her to attend. She
was there this past fall greeting old friends, meeting new ones, and
enjoying the banquet. She was considering joining us in Houston this
upcoming summer.
Nyla's health began a slow decline about a year ago, but she was still able
to enjoy two birthday parties in honor of her 95th birthday last spring.
We will miss Nyla, and I am only sorry more of us didn't get to know her
and her Federation spirit. I will send out more details of her service when
they become available.
