It really depends on what you are trying to do. For example, there are a lot of apps that display QR codes that another device like a bus fare box will scan; As long as you know where that is and it's in view, then it will work. Going the other way, scanning a code with your phone can work as long as you know where said code is, either it's marked or you have a good ithea where it should ;. You use the camera app to scan.
