	While SHIIP-SMP volunteers are best known for providing one-on-one Medicare counseling- including helping Medicare beneficiaries compare their plan options - they do so much more!

Starting in 2021, volunteers at two SHIIP-SMP Sponsor Sites have been recognized for being the “Best in State” at helping clients find financial assistance to cover Medicare costs and helping clients avoid Medicare fraud, scams and abuse. This year the awards were presented to UnityPoint Health Grinnell Regional Medical Center and Lucas County Health Center.

What's New in Medicare? 

Open Enrollment Period is Underway

	Each fall, during the Open Enrollment Period (OEP) from October 15th to December 7th, Medicare beneficiaries have the chance to switch to a new Medicare drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan for the following year. 

In 2025, there are many changes (including cancellations and new plans) with both Medicare drug and advantage plans.  With all these changes it more important than ever this year to complete a plan comparison to understand your options during Open Enrollment.

Saving Money & Medicare

Make Sure you Compare Plans

	Part D Drug Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans can change their contracts, coverage and benefits every year. That means current plans may not cover your existing prescriptions next year, they could change cost-sharing requirements or could even add prior authorization requirements needed to get your prescription covered. 

Despite all these great reasons to get an annual plan comparison done, a recent study revealed that only 31% of Medicare beneficiaries compare their current plan with other Medicare plans during the annual open enrollment period.

Medicare Fraud Spotlight

Iowa Nurse Gets Sentenced to 20 Years for Medicare Fraud

	It was recently reported that the Iowa Board of Nursing revoked the license of an Iowa nurse in June of 2024. Elizabeth Hernandez, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in September 2023 after being convicted of seven federal offenses involving wire fraud and health care fraud. Prosecutors stated that Hernandez collected $1.6 million from a $192 million fraudulent billing scheme over the course of three years.

Many of Hernandez’s false claims involved prescribing expensive and medically unnecessary genetic tests and durable medical equipment (DME) to thousands of Medicare beneficiaries she’d never spoken to.
