Dear NFBI Family,
It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I need to inform you of the
passing of our oldest member, Nyla Cecilia Crain, 97 years young. Although
it was not unexpected, it is sad to no longer have her with us. We will
miss her laugh, her capacity for friendship, and her intelligence. She was
a fountain of knowledge for both the past and the present. Below are a few
words from Jonathan Ice in memory of Nyla.
"I first met Nyla Crain when she was 91 years old. I was at the Iowa City
Public Library opening up a meeting room for a meeting of the Old Capitol
Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. She came up to me and said
that she was losing her vision due to macular degeneration and wanted to
meet some other people who were dealing with vision loss. I told her this
is a great place to start. Nyla did not enter our chapter timidly or
apologetically. As many people age they become leery of trying new things.
Not so Nyla. She seemed to thrive on learning new things, and everything
was a new adventure for her. (For example, she learned U E B contracted
Braille at the age of 93.) When she was healthy, Nyla regularly attended
our meetings. As her cancer rebounded her attendance suffered, but she
remained in contact with us through regular visits from Intesar Duncan and
Michael Baxter. She would honor us with her presence every once in a while
when we had some kind of a special occasion. We will miss her positive
attitude and lust for learning. May your next adventure be even better than
your last, Nyla Crain. Signed by Jonathan."
Nyla expressed her wish to not have an obituary written about her. I am
sending separately the link to Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City who will
be hosting an informal memorial service for her this Friday, August 8th
from 11 a m until 1 p m. If you can make it, please join us to celebrate
her unique and inspiring life.
