Forwarding this from Cody Dolinsek of ICUB. The one time I visited the State Historical Museum, I really enjoyed it and I think this is definitely worth checking out.

My apologies for not sending this out much sooner than now. I hope perhaps some of the members of NFB may be able to join some of the members of ICUB at this event at the Iowa State Historical Society. See below for further details. Thank you!

Experience the State Historical Museum Through a New Lens

You’re invited to try out a new way to experience the State Historical Museum of Iowa! Visit the museum on Saturday, May 17 anytime from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to test out NaviLens, innovative digital codes that unlock never-before-seen exhibit content including images, videos, audio, language translations, and children’s activities.

Using the free smartphone app NaviLens GO, visitors can scan an exhibit space to pick up unique digital codes that can be read by the app from almost any angle. The codes also provide wayfinding around the museum, alerting visitors to exits, restrooms, elevators, and more.

A separate free app called NaviLens (without the “GO”) provides additional navigation information for people who are blind or have low vision. Scan a room with the app to hear what’s located in that direction and its proximity. Visitors also gain access to artifact and image descriptions in addition to exhibit content—all read out loud from your personal device.

Bettina Dolinsek (pictured above), a member of SHSI’s Accessibility Advisory Group, has been instrumental in the development of this project, providing expert guidance and leading user testing. “As someone who is blind, it is important to me to be able to enter a building and meaningfully participate. Now that the State Historical Society has NaviLens, I know my visit there will be one of independence and inclusiveness as I explore all they have to offer.”

Best of all the apps are free to download and don't require an account—all a visitor needs is a smart device. No smartphone? No problem! A limited number of iPads are available to borrow from the museum information desk.

We’d love to hear your feedback! If you join for the launch event, we welcome your feedback. What did you like about NaviLens? What else would you like the app to do? Did you find any glitches? We’ll have multiple ways to provide feedback on the day of the event, so please share your thoughts!

Touch Tour of Civics in Action

Register today for another unique way to explore the museum’s collections. During the NaviLens launch event on Saturday, May 17, museum staff will host a Touch Tour of the exhibit Civics in Action. Touch tours are a great way for visitors who are blind or have low vision to experience the Civics in Action exhibit and learn about stories of civic engagement in Iowa while touching real museum artifacts. This program is hosted in collaboration with the Iowa Council of the United Blind.
