He was 74. Born February 28, 1948 to Gorden and Erville (Watkins) Jackson in Guthrie Center, IA, Carroll's life was shaped from a very early age by poor eyesight. After an archery accident in the 6th grade further damaged his vision to legal blindness, he attended the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School (IBSSS) in Vinton, IA. In addition to academics, he excelled at woodworking and swimming, and he was active in Boy Scouts. He graduated from IBSSS in 1967. During his high school years he met Susan Ann Huber. They were high school sweethearts and married August 28, 1968 in Guthrie Center, IA. Their daughter, Sara Elizabeth, was born in 1973. Carroll earned a B.A. in Industrial Technology Education from Westmar College, a M.A. in Special Education for the Visually Impaired from The Ohio State University, and completed all coursework towards a Ph.D (ABD) in Educational Administration, also at OSU. Early in his career, Carroll taught high school industrial arts in Crystal Lake, IA. He then spent two years as the Career Education Coordinator for The Ohio State School for the Blind in Columbus, OH before serving as the school's Principal from 1977-1981. In 1982 he was hired as the Executive Director of the Upshaw Institute for the Blind, a nonprofit agency in Detroit, MI. During his 20 years leading the agency he served on numerous advisory committees for professional associations within the blindness field and held many elected leadership roles. He was the recipient of Crain's Detroit Business award for Best Managed Nonprofit in Southeast Michigan in 2000. Carroll's life changed when he trained with his first Leader Dog for the Blind in 1997, and soon after Leader Dogs recruited him as a traveling Field Representative. Presenting and fundraising for Leader Dogs quickly became Carroll's life passion. Over the years, he gave hundreds of speeches to Lions Clubs, conventions, service clubs and schools all over the country. Carroll was very proud to say that in total he flew 843 airline flights accompanied by one of his incredible Leader Dogs. Throughout the years, Carroll was actively involved with Lion's Clubs, enjoyed woodturning and woodworking, loved anything to do with airplanes including building and flying numerous radio controlled glider planes, was fearlessly willing to go anywhere and try anything new, and was a Harry Potter trivia whiz. Carroll is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Susan, his daughter Sara, two younger brothers, Kile (Susan) Jackson and Kim (Denise) Jackson, and a younger sister, Karen (Michael) Walters, plus four nephews and a niece. He is also survived by his Leader Dog, Will. Carroll is preceded in death by his parents and his Leader Dogs, Jack and Hunter. A private family service will take place at a later date.
