Subject: ALERT: Possible House Vote This Week

Dear BEA members:

We have learned that there is a possibility that a pro-rest stop commercialization amendment could be offered on the House floor on Wednesday or Thursday of this week when the Transportation Appropriations bill comes to the floor. We do not yet know whether or not this amendment will be offered, and we will let you know as soon as we find out for certain.

In the meantime, it is urgent that you contact the transportation legislative assistant for your US Representative - not the Senators, as this vote would take place only on the House side - with the following message:

"I am (calling/emailing) as a blind business owner to urge the

(Congressman/Congresswoman) to vote against any amendment that would change current law to permit commercialization of rest stops on federal highways. This amendment may be offered on the Transportation appropriations bill and/or the highway bill reauthorization. Across the country, more than 500 blind entrepreneurs earn a living and support their families by managing vending facilities at federal highway rest stops. In some states, commissions from highway vending facilities support training that helps blind individuals to become successful business owners and entrepreneurs. I urge you to vote against any provision to commercialize highway rest stops and put blind entrepreneurs out of work."

If you know the name of your US Representative, you can call the House switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask them to connect you to the office. Ask to speak to or leave a message for the legislative assistant who handles transportation issues.

If you are not sure who your US Representative is, go to www.House.gov. On the top left side of the home page, there is a box to enter your zip code and look up your Representative's name.

Thank you for helping to defend business opportunities for blind entrepreneurs!
