[Trainer-talk] Math Tutor

Hello,

As a blind Math student, I would want a Braille display also involved, if
possible. If using it, I would use uncontracted Braille, just as I do when
creating HTML or other computer programs. Also, in my college Algebra
course, we used Excel. So make sure the student is familiar with JAWS
commands with Excel, such as how to read the row and title, how to move
around, etc. You may even want to do this prep work for other types of
tables, such as those on the Internet. BTW, check out the Help tutorials in
the JAWS help menu for how to work with Excel and how to work in tables. In
addition, you may want some form of raised line drawing board, probably both
of the ones I know about. One is available for about $14 at
www.braillebookstore.com and one can draw on it and then feel the picture
without flipping the page. Also, best of all, it uses regular print paper. I
think it might be in the toy department, but I cannot remember without
checking. However, there is a search form where you can type in drawing
board or something like that. The other type is the rubber backing on the
board that uses the thin, easily wrinkled sheets. It is also called a raised
line drawing board, and I am pretty sure APH sells it. It may actually have
the word kit after it since it also comes with paper, I think. Finally, when
tactile drawwings do not need to be made by the student and can be prepared
ahead of time, a great program is called Quick Tac, where 4.0, the beta
version is free.

One can create tactile diagrams and then Braille them using a Juliet or
other embosser that allows for Brailling pictures. I've found it best to
Braille from within the program rather than bringing up the picture in
Duxbury. Note I was not able to independently create the picture; I did need
sighted assistance for doing this. The person draws using the mouse. The
resulting Braille embossed image turns out wonderful.
And, don't forget APH already sells many Math kits with tactile objects,
such as shapes and the like and also graphs, such as those coordinate grids
for Geometry already embossed.
Just FYI. Anita

Good evening list,

I have to meet with a math tutor next week to discuss assistive technology
and it6s use with blind students. Primarily JFW that is.
Does anyone have any suggestions/material which I could share?
Math intimidates me to be honest, so any information would be useful.

Regards

Subject: [Trainer-talk] Meteorology Question

I have been sent the following question. Please respond to Jeanne
Anderson JScheira at aol.com
directly as she is not subscribed to this list.

Hello,
>> I currently have a student in high school who has future plans of
going into Meteorology. He is a bright young man and has a strong
passion for weather. He has minimal usable vision therefore is unable
to read visual information such as radar. He uses Braille and
assistive technology very well.
>>
>> Is there any technology that anyone is familiar with for reading
radar for individuals who are visually impaired?
>>
>> Thank you in advance for any input!
