Thanks everyone for your helpful responses.
I also called FS as for Denise's recommendation and the tech guy told me to go to the control panel and make sure that the Service Pac (probably not spelling correctly), is checked. Hopefully, one of these things will work. He commented that in earlier versions, this little tweaking was not necessary.

Hello,
After upgrading to 14, a couple of weeks ago, I have found a couple of problems that perhaps someone might know how to solve. When I run spell check or select text, JAWS becomes silent. Frankly, it almost crashes with spell check. When items are elected, it will not say what is being selected. It has nothing to do with the verbosity level and when I went into the settings menue (Insert+v), it gets quiet there as well.
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

I'd repair the install, A lot of times Something gets lost when you just do an update?
This would require going to freedom scientific's website, downloading the proper version of jaws, saving it, Launching it, and choosing the repair option?

Bonnie,
This is extremely odd behavior and I don't claim to have a magic bullet solution. One of the things I'm wondering about is how the display settings might be affecting some of what you're describing. Specifically, I'm wondering what your color settings and screen resolution are set for.
Frankly, this wouldn't explain why JAWS would go silent upon invoking the options dialog with insert-V but it's what I'd start looking into.

I have probably 80 Clients that I support off and on over the past two
months running j14 latest and haven't had any problems. That being
said, I very rarely update or have my clients update via the patch
update, or from the dialogue that pops up and offers you an
opportunity to download the latest update. 99.9% of the time, when I
am told an update is available, I go to the FS site, and download the
entire .exe file.
To add to a previous post, if you have done such an update, download
the latest build from the FS web site, and save it some where
relatively easy to get to.
Once it's downloaded, navigate to the run prompt Windows key +r, and
shift tab back to the browse button. Press space bar on browse, and
Find the .exe file that you donloaded for jaws and press enter. Do not
press ok at this point. Go to the end of the file path that is in the
run prompt, and type the following, /type repair
Make sure there is a space between the end of the file path and the /type
Press enter and say yes to the UAC if prompted.
This is a different repair than the one offered in the setup package.

a brill edge or a Perkins many might be a nice medium option for you. The braille edge has 40 cells and will also allow text and BRF files to be used. It has a calendar and a calculator so will perform many of the functions that a notetaker would without the high cost.
