Hi, Laine.
I've been using NVDA since before its official first release and I'd
like to do what I can to assist you by email, when my time allows.
First, I'll be the first to say that NVDA's object navigation system is
not for the faint of heart or at least for new or inexperienced users.
It might be easier to have your consumer go into screen review mode,
which will make screen review much easier.
Pressing insert numpad-7 or insert numpad-1 switches between screen
review and object review and, when on the Web, document review. Going
into screen review mode should make the reviewing process easier and
more intuitive.
Once you're in screen review mode, you can use 7, 8 or 9 on the numeric
keypad to read the previous, current and next line, respectively. 4, 5
and 6 is previous, current and next word and 1, 2 and 3 are previous,
current and next character. It's like the old ASAP screen reader for
DOS, if you're familiar with that screen reader.
It's possible that you're not hearing everything that you're expecting
to hear while navigating through objects because simple review is
enabled, which may be filtering out some of what you're expecting. I'm
not sure why pressing insert-b tends to read more info than what you get
while using object navigation commands, but go into NVDA's preferences
and go to Review Settings. From this dialog, uncheck simple review and
see if the results are more to your liking.
