Have you tried to play around with the recording settings? The second generation VRS recording quality can be vastly improved when the recording settings are tweaked(or that has worked in my experience at least).
Respect,
Amin

Subject: [Trainer-talk] 2nd Generation Victor Reader Stream and External Microphone
Hi All,
For anyone who has worked with both the first generation and second generation Victor Reader, you are probably aware that the recording quality of the second generation is very poor, especially when compared to the first generation of the device. I am working with a student who is hard of hearing and wears hearing aids. He would like to use the Victor Reader in class to record lectures, but after using the recorder for just this purpose, despite sitting in the front row, his instructors can barely be heard on the recording. Listening to the recorded lectures using headphones helps only slightly. Placing the recording on the instructor's podium is not the solution. Does anyone have any recommendations for an external microphone that would work well with the Victor? Thank you in advance for any assistance provided.
Mauricio
