[Trainer-talk] Opinions on Obtaining a Tablet

As much of an iOS fan as I am, I don't think that an iPad is equal to a
windows 8.1 Tablet running real Office.  But I don't think you will get a
lot of help from mailing lists on this; you really need to feel the tablets
before buying.  Some might have keyboard options with numeric keypads,
(though the JAWS laptop layout would be worth learning if you could talk
yourself into doing it.)  I would go to a Microsoft store, Samsung store  or
a Best Buy, even though you may not necessarily intend to buy from them,
just so you can have hands-onexperience.  You want to make sure that the
function keys serve as function keys, not as media keys, and that this
behavior can be changed if they don't.  Nowadays, this is usually possible.


In sum, the windows 8.1 tablets would far outperform your Pac Mate; you just
have to choose the one that is right for you.

To add to what Chris has already said, you can also use a wireless 
keyboard with an iPad, where you can access your apps as well as edit 
documents.

It may not come with MS Office per se, though there is an iOS app for Office
which I have heard is improving its accessibility. I have not played with
this app, however, so I can't offer any firsthand experience. However, Pages
works very well with VoiceOver and can perform many of the actions of
Microsoft Word. There are also other apps which serve as Office suite
substitutes: Numbers for Excel, Keynote for PowerPoint, etc. With the iWork
suite, which encompasses all these apps, now available for free with iOS 7,
I would consider purchasing an iPad as my tablet of choice. What makes you
want to lean toward the Windows 8 tablets?
