Sarah,
What version of Jaws are you using? Updating to Jaws 17 helped resolve a freezing issue and slow computer when a friend upgraded to Windows 10.

Good morning. I am considering purchasing either the BrailleNote Touch or the Braille Sense u2 mini to use at work and at home. I have a laptop using windows 10 and Jaws, but it is not a good solution. The computer often freezes while I'm writing a document, and I also do not receive a notification before the battery dies. I take notes for a college student and also write novels. Are there any bugs I need to be aware of since the BrailleNote Touch is a new device? Hims and Humanware have payment plan options. On average, how much would I pay every month? I am a fast Braille reader, and the devices I've had before had a thirst-two cell Braille display. Will the u2 mini continue to be updated? I would also like the pros and cons of both devices. Feel free to email me off list. Thank you. Sarah

I hope people will answer this on the list since we all can benefit from
this information. I plan to purchase a Braillenote Touch in the near future
because I believe it is the technology of the future.

I have used the Touch since June. I am quite happy with it. There has been one update in August, and it improved the voice quality and a feow other things.
There are some features that I want to see included in the future, but I cannot identify more bugs.
I have recommended the Touch for several people since June.

Good morning all,
My concern with the touch is it slow processor and the fact that it is raining an older version of android.
As more third-party apps become available, I suspect they could be dropping support for the Kitcat operating system.
Also, at this time you cannot use the braille note touch as a terminal with any PC Mac or iPhone or iPad.
Thanks.

Though I may not be right on this, I understand that humanware will be able
to update the operating system as needed in future. I do think that the
terminal issue is one that users will find important and do not get a clear
sense when that will be addressed. I hear it will be but there seems
uncertainty as to when.

Good morning. I have a laptop running windows 10 and Jaws. The computer often freezes while I'm writing a document, so I have to close then reopen the file. For some reason, the book I'm writing now has squares in it, and Jaws will no longer read the file. It worked fine yesterday. Is there anything I can do to remove the squares and return the file to its original format? Thank you. Sarah

I'm not sure what you mean by the squares, so this is a wild guess...Are you
using Word 2007 or higher?
If so, one possibility is that the document's font was accidentally changed
to one that can't display the characters in use. The way around this problem
is to select the entire document with Ctrl + A and then hold down the Ctrl
key as you press the Spacebar. This changes the font back to whatever
default font assigned to the document originally. It's worth a shot to try
this if the squares you mentioned replaced the characters that were typed.
Good Luck!

Hi Sarah,
Depends on what application you are writing your document in. A number of
applications like MS word will periodically make automatic backups while the
document is open. These backups are placed in a temporary filename, which
starts with a tilde character. The temporary file is usually saved in the
same folder the original document is. This automatic backup is used in case
the application closes incorrectly. So it sounds like your scenario. The
backup file is saved in a binary format that openly the application can
understand. If a user tries to open this file you typically get the square
characters you are talking about.
I would check to make sure the file you are opening is not the backup file
starting with a tilde character. In MS word depending on your version will
have a recovery panel that will ask if you want to recover and or use the
original file or the backup copy.

Subject: [Trainer-Talk] Computer issue
Good morning. I have a laptop running windows 10 and Jaws. The computer
often freezes while I'm writing a document, so I have to close then reopen
the file. For some reason, the book I'm writing now has squares in it, and
Jaws will no longer read the file. It worked fine yesterday. Is there
anything I can do to remove the squares and return the file to its original
format? Thank you. Sarah

When I recently read the manual for the Braille Note Touch, there was no
mention of a search, or search and replace, feature in KeyWord. Under those
circumstances, I cannot imagine using the device. Perhaps it was simply an
omission in the manual? I am a HIMS fan, though I don't suggest that all is
perfect there either.

Good morning. I am considering purchasing either the BrailleNote Touch or
the Braille Sense u2 mini to use at work and at home. I have a laptop using
windows 10 and Jaws, but it is not a good solution. The computer often
freezes while I'm writing a document, and I also do not receive a
notification before the battery dies. I take notes for a college student and
also write novels. Are there any bugs I need to be aware of since the
BrailleNote Touch is a new device? Hims and Humanware have payment plan
options. On average, how much would I pay every month? I am a fast Braille
reader, and the devices I've had before had a thirst-two cell Braille
display. Will the u2 mini continue to be updated? I would also like the pros
and cons of both devices. Feel free to email me off list. Thank you.

For those who use Learning Ally, their current app is being replaced by
a new app called Learning Ally Link, which they promise has many new
features, with more being added throughout the year. I have just found
out about this and so I have not had a chance to use it.

I have a touch too, for about a month. I still
have a lot to learn. It has lots of potential
needs some further development, but off to a good start.
