I understand that you do not need amazon prime. That is more for shopping and such. However, there is a low cost amazon echo for music only and only on the echo. Not other shared devices like a cell. I am unsure if you get this package and if you have multi echos if it will work on all echos. It is under $5 a month I believe.
Also, if you have multi echos you can set them up to be intercoms.
I need to find out about the amazon echo music on multi echos myself.

It is not necessary to have Amazon prime to use the echo or echo.. I now have a Google home mini and an echo.. And I like the echo device much better so far. I have a feeling the Google device will catch up quickly as far as skills and devices that it works with but Amazon has just had a lot more time to perfect their services so far and you can also use it to make phone calls if you set that up in the app. Both apps are very assessable.
