Hello David,
Thanks for contactting us regarding your NVDA questions. I myself am an NVDA user, so hopefully my insights can help you.
1. Regarding the 'Report Emphasis' on the Document settings dialog box, it will allow you to announce emphasis formatting in HTML and other rich edit controls, mostly on Web pages. For instance, if it encounters an HTML element or tag such as <b> or <em>, which are for Bold and Emphasis, respectively, NVDA will say the text has emphasis when you move by word, character, or line. Personally, I don't really use this feature, since it announces the presence, but, say, it doesn't use another voice or speech setting, like how JAWS would do it, when it finds emphasis.

2. On the 'Speak Line Numbers' setting, I believe the application itself you are using has to actually support line numbers for it to work. Apps such as Notepad++ that actually have line numbers, visually, for instance, if you check that box in NVDA Document Formatting settings, it will also say the line numbers as you scroll through. With apps like Word, or simple text editors, it will not work, unless you enable line numbers in those apps.

I hope this helps you in any way.

Sincerely,
Humberto
