Microsoft Edge Chromium ready for download on Windows 7, 8, 8.1

Although the new version of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium has been available as a pre-release for a few months, it’s been only available for Windows 10<https://pureinfotech.com/download-chromium-microsoft-edge-windows-10/> and macOS<https://pureinfotech.com/microsoft-edge-chromium-macos-download/>.

Now, the software giant is announcing<https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/06/19/introducing-microsoft-edge-preview-builds-for-windows-7-windows-8-and-windows-8-1/> the new version of the web browser for older versions of the OS, including for Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

Initially, Microsoft Edge<https://pureinfotech.com/tag/microsoft-edge/> is available for download in the Canary channel, which means daily updates and with more bugs that can impact the user experience.

This is virtually the same version of the browser as the one available for Windows 10<https://pureinfotech.com/tag/windows-10/>, as such you’ll find almost all the same features, including Internet Explorer mode for enterprise customers, but features like dark mode won’t work until future updates.

How to install Microsoft Edge Chromium on Windows 7, 8, 8.1

Use these steps to download and install Microsoft Edge on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1:

  1.  Open Microsoft Edge Insider Channels website<https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/download/>.

  2.  Under the “Canary Channel” section, click the down arrow button and select the Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7 option. (If you’re loading the site using an older version of Windows, the version will be selected automatically.)

  3.  Click the Accept and download button to save the installer on your device.

  4.  Double-click the MicrosoftEdgeSetupCanary.exe to install Microsoft Edge.

Once you complete the steps, the early version of Microsoft Edge will install on your device running an older version of Windows.

Also, because the Chromium version of Edge uses a separate update mechanism from Windows Update, Microsoft will be releasing updates as soon as they’re ready for all supported versions, including for all versions of Windows and macOS.
