[Trainer-Talk] Question: How to Use the On Screen Keyboard with JAWS

Dear Mr. Goldfield:

It has been my experience that there's a lot of variability with laptops and their touch screen interfaces. On my laptop, for instance, I am able to perform all or if not most of the touch screen gestures provided by JAWS, include the one to open and close the on screen keyboard. On my Desktop PC, however, I don't have the same luck. Perhaps this is because how the hardware is set up? Or maybe, the main Windows PC touchscreen tablets / pcs aren't setup to respond to multifinger gestures? But that is just my experience.

Regarding the gesture to close the keyboard by swiping down with 4 fingers... this one isn't working at all either. I think this is a standard Windows gesture. The open on screen keyboard gesture works fine, but I often need to use the "close" button located near the right side of the keyboard on the screen and double tap it.

I have often find it useful to turn on input help mode in JAWS, with Insert+1 (on the numbers row) on top to and then do some gestures to see if JAWS interprets them correctly.

Hopefully everything works out and good luck with your presentation!

Cheers,
Humberto

As I make my way through the relevant help topic in the JAWS help system I am having little difficulty with most of the gestures, except for one. I am not able to invoke the on-screen keyboard using the four finger swipe down/up gesture. At first I had wondered if the on-screen keyboard would not be available if the physical keyboard was attached. However, even after removing the keyboard the gesture still doesn't work. I have so far tried doing this in Word 365 and in Wordpad. What's the secret to accessing the on-screen keyboard? Should it not work in Word and in Wordpad? I welcome any feedback from any users who have experience with this.
