[Trainer-Talk] Blind User Depositing Checks on an iPhone

Hello Reg, and Others:

What an interesting experience! I am thinking that the folks at Wells Fargo Bank's app development team need to learn more from Microsoft and their Seeing AI team as well as the KNFB reader team. Seeing AI is an iOS app that has some technologies of proxemics that interface the camera such that, for instance, it will tell you in real time what edges of the paper are visible and shoot the image when they are all visible. It will play a sort of 'cold' or 'hot' sound when you are in a barcode mode and you are scanning the code until you can successfully find it, of course with the guidance of the app! KNFB will have your phone vibrate to guide you in the direction you should tilt your phone so you can take the picture when you no longer feel the vibrations, that is, it means you are good to go.

It will be rather awesome that a mainstream app such as a banking app can make all those features fully accessible so that we the Blind can cash our checks fully and completely independently just as quickly and effectively and efficiently as are sighted peers.

I am wondering if there is a way to give feedback about the Wells Fargo app and point them to how those other apps are doing it? If so I would take the opportunity to give it right there.

I worked with a client on this with the Wells Fargo Bank app the other day. The app itself was well labeled and quite accessible, butt the process was almost impossible to complete without sight. It forces you to use the phone in landscape mode. So the scanjig stand would not work because you can only have the phone in portrait for it to see the document. The app won’t tell you if the check is right side up or not. So we used KNFB Reader for this part. But it would only go through if it processed both sides of the check perfectly or you had to start over. And then it wouldn’t just let you redo the side that did not work. Has anyone accomplished this successfully?
