[Trainer-Talk] accessible screen casting software

Thanks Reg, for the info about sound cards. I always thought sound cards with headset were very expensive.

I have done offline teaching demonstrations on Zoom for one of my students last spring and it worked really well. I especially like that Zoom creates good quality audio and video recordings of my stuff with small files which is good for storage.

Oh, BTW also, I know Ashley asked about screenshots. These are very easy to generate and look for. Printscreen or Control+Printscreen keys will do it for you. Then write your email or document, and when ready just do Control+V and bingo!!!! your image is attached.

Plus, if you have Dropbox or OneDrive setup, you can have one of them upload your screenshots automatically and they will place them in their specific folders, something useful if you need to upload them to a school assignment, for example.

Happy Monday,

Humberto

Great information Humberto. I was not aware of the open broadcasting software. I wonder if there is an iOS version that’s pretty cool. You can get around the recording jaws problem by buying a $10 USB soundcard. Then in the Jaws utilities menu you can specify where you want jaws to go. if you want it in to your recording, or just in your head. my only question is can you pre-record your demo offline in zoom, so you don’t have to do it on the fly because that’s usually when things go wrong?

Dear Ashley,

Hope you are also doing well in these troubling times.

There are two options to go about this. I will explain about OBS (Open broadcasting software) and Zoom itself.

I personally use the OBS app to record content from the computer's sound as well as my voice if I want to do demonstrations. I've done accessibility feedbacks in this way and it really works. The link to download this app is below, although I gather you are using Windows, but the page asks for what OS you are downloading anyway so you know.

https://obsproject.com/download

All you do is specify, once you install it, that you want to record video of inside your system, E.G. your screen, as its main source, other wise you'd end up with blank video with the audio. Then set the file extention as MP4 to record to. Do extention works well if say, you are doing Youtube or something.

The other app I mentioned is Zoom. The only catch is you need a Zoom account to try this out, and for the most part it is free. But Zoom has a really neat and straightforward way to capture both your screen and PC sound. Zoom also has very easy key commands to remember and lookup. Technically you would share your screen, and check the box that says you want to share computer sound in the dialog box that comes up, then when done, you just start recording. In addition, you can start your demos on Zoom with your video from your Webcam turned on, so people could see you.

Depending on what kind of demo / presentations you intent to do, you have options. I would be mindful of recording JAWS, however, as it might get in the way and generate unwanted distractions, unless you actually recording JAWS as part of your demos.

Good luck!! Hope this helps you.

Have a terrific summer.

Humberto

Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well in these hot summer days.
I’m planning to record my screen to show demos, products I like, or meetings from zoom.

Are there any accessible screen casting software? I need one to work with Windows and Jaws.
Also in Microsoft applications, can you screen shot with jaws? If so, how do you know what the screen shot is of?
Do you just open up word and type something, for instance, and then hit the screen shot button to capture what you wrote? Then, where can you put your screen shot? In emails? Powerpoint?
Does screen shot feature capture your current window including the menus and ribbons?

If you suggest a software
, do the software allow you to use your voice while capturing your screen? I know I could not film myself without a full out video recorder and working webcam. However, I was hoping to record my voice along with the screen presentations.
I’ve read good things about Screen Cast and I Spring but I don’t know if that is accessible.

I read a list of software ideas here:

Any ideas would be helpful. I hope there is something out there with simple features and ideally keystroke commands.

Thanks!

Ashley
