[Trainer-Talk] Trainer-Talk Digest, Vol 192, Issue 2iPhone Se 2020

In addition Apple has implemented Touch ID into the power button of the latest iPad Air. While I'd have preferred something built directly into the screen the Touch ID does work well using the power/wake/sleep button.

The rumor was that the fingerprint sensor might come back in the new phones this year but I don’t think anybody knows for sure. In the side button. It was very popular and a lot of the new android phones have it that way. I’m not sure why Apple took it away.

Hello,

I purchased the 12 mini and love it. I have small hands. it works better than my 8 did for Braille Screen Input. It always seems like the dots were in weird places, particularly dot 5. The dots occasionally get messed up with this one but generally, after recalibrating, it works quite well. I created "back of the phone taps," for pressing the home button and for sliding up to unlock,, (two taps) and three taps to go to the App Switcher; but I've begun using the swipe up technique and I've become good at it. I, like Scott, definitely prefer the thumb print and it seems to me that they could create a place somewhere on the phone to be able to put a thumb print. However, I have also talked with sighted folks about what happens at night when the lights aren't on and they get on their phones while their partner is sleeping and they also say they prefer the finger print!

I totally understand how you feel about Touch ID, I strongly prefer it over Face ID. I think you will like the SE 2020, it will just require a little bit of an adjustment since the screen is slightly smaller.

I hope these messages have helped some?

I?m looking at the online userguide with all the Jaws input commands on the focus 40, but there are a couple of items I do not see on it. Firstly, I am not sure how to perform the windows D function with the display Perkins keys to go to the desktop. Next, I can?t figure out how to press the key combination to perform the windows key function, the one that takes us to the search bar to search for all of our apps. Lastly, I am not able to simulate an alt tab on the Perkins keyboard. Do any of you know what any of these keystrokes are or if they do or don?t exist? I would really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Dear Jason,

Thanks for reaching out with your questions. Yes, the focus commands for emulating the Windows+D and Alt+Tab keystrokes are indeed mentioned on the user's guide. Depending on where you look online, the user guide that is from the official Freedom Scientific page is below:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.freedomscientific.com%2FContent%2FDocuments%2FManuals%2FFocus%2FFocus40Blue%2FFocus-40-Blue-Online-Users-Guide.htm%23commandsoverview&data=04%7C01%7C%7C160e6a65451a44bc898908d93d91fe2d%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637608519507189269%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=GcDJNOCLqQu80P%2FkWvvreUgsuGf10pZRcJA2%2BO7YnGM%3D&reserved=0

In the above link, if you look under the "Commands Overview" section, there are subsections for modifyer keys, windows commands, Braille commands, ETC. they will be explained and listed in tables which are neatly laid out for JAWS to read. I would take a look at this page to learn how to simulate the keystrokes you need and to refer to.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, let me know.

Take care,

Humberto

> Hello all. I just had a question on the focus 40 fifth generation braille display. Thank you.

I had an iPhone 8 before upgrading to the plus. The hardest part of using BSI on the 8 (which is still an issue on the 8 plus) is figuring out a way to hold the phone so the speaker isn?t muted when typing. From what I?ve heard, this will always be a problem no matter what you do.
