Hello david. I am not aware of needing to use the older version of the
extension. I believe that what they have done is unified what used to be
the web only extension into the current one. Installing the more modern
extension will allow you to either use 1password as a standalone web applet
or together with the 1password version 8 desktop client. It works well. My
main browser is Google Chrome on both Windows and Mac and I don't have any
issues. In fact, I rather like the way the newer extension works where you
can simply use the down arrow to autofill instead of always having to use
the keyboard shortcut, which is still available. I hope this helps.
