[Trainer-Talk] Possible Mistake and Confusion regarding Microsoft Outlook

Hello,
I am using what I think is the Classic Outlook program too.
I use the Microsoft Office suite desktop apps which includes Outlook.
It's the standard Outlook program with the ribbons and you have folders for
sent items, trash, known spam and a few more folders by default.

I did hear about the new Outlook for the web program which Is not real
accessible.
I agree with Christopher that the classic Outlook is great. I truly like it
and am so glad to have the
funds to purchase the desktop applications because the free Windows mail app
is terrible.
Sadly, Windows Live Mail was replaced with the Windows mail app.
I cannot believe they are changing things again. If it works well, don't go
changing it.

I learned on this list that the Windows Mail app is going to be replaced by
a new Outlook. If its not accessible for screen reader users, that is a
terrible move, and maybe NFB will advocate for accessibility and sue if
needed.

When I volunteer train people with Jaws, I try to find the simplest way to
accomplish tasks using less keystrokes because these people are older or
might have other disabilities and its harder for them to remember so many
steps.
I like to teach and demonstrate Outlook or the basic html side of Gmail.

It seems like with all these new changes from Microsoft, its harder and
harder to use applications.
NFB passed a resolution about the new Outlook web program which apparently
has some access issues.
I was so disappointed with the introduction of the ribbons and few menues.
In Windows 10, they took away even the few menus that Windows 7 had.
Then they took away the audible chimes that sound when you shut down the
computer.

I suggest we use Classic Outlook as long as possible but also explore the
new software to find what is and is not accessible. Then with the help of
NFB and hopefully other disability groups, we can advocate to Microsoft.

Humberto, well articulated opinion as well.

Ashley

Thanks for passing along that resource.
I use office 365 with the classic outlook.
I actually had an experience where my computer was trying to get me
to upgrade to the new program but I refused to do it.
I truly like the classic outlook.

*Too many Microsoft Outlook's - we explain them all*
<https://office-watch.com/2022/many-faces-of-microsoft-outlook/> (last
updated July 2024)

The long and the short of it, as of today's date is this:

1. Outlook for Windows - Official name of what replaces the Mail, People,
and Calendar Apps on Windows 10 & 11. Free.

2. Outlook 365 - Is one program, with two user interface variants:

          a) New Outlook - this UI and the UI for Outlook for Windows are
virtually identical and while not inaccessible, are not particularly screen
reader friendly. Much of the functionality we know and love in Outlook 365
(classic) is missing.

          b) Outlook Classic, which is, at times, styled Outlook (Classic).
It will be supported until 2029.

          c) One can toggle between the New Outlook and Outlook Classic
User Interface in Outlook 365. Even though it's now past the preview stage,
the instructions for toggling between New Outlook and Outlook Classic remain
the same: Getting back to Outlook Classic User Interface if you're in the
Inaccessible New Outlook User Interface (AKA Outlook Preview or Outlook PRE)

          d) If the simplified ribbons are showing in Outlook Classic,
here's how you go back to the full ribbons: Restoring the Classic Ribbons in
Outlook 365 <https://groups.io/g/M365-Accessibility/message/7552>
