Hello Curtis. I'm wondering, if you were to add a shortcut to the shared
file so that it appears in My Drive, will it work from the Desktop client?
Note, I have not tried this myself as I write this, so might be shooting in
the dark. I too, agree, that Google should have addressed this issue years
ago.

This solution is the most efficacious one I know about, but be aware that
Google Drive Desktop does not give you access to the folder which lists
"files shared with me".
After many years, Google still has not remedied this problem with Google
Drive Desktop.
