Job Description:
This position is assigned to the Nebraska Center for the Blind, a program of the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This position is responsible for providing nonvisual skills training in the Home Management class, which includes alternative techniques for cooking, cleaning, laundry, sewing, and other activities of daily living.
Job Duties:
1. Support the mission and philosophy of the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, providing nonvisual instruction using Structured Discovery methods to adult clients of the Nebraska Center for the Blind while adhering to the National Blindness Professional Certification Board's code of conduct. Instruction will primarily be provided in the areas of cooking; cleaning; laundry; sewing; and activities of daily living, such as identifying and managing money, meal planning and grocery shopping, grooming, marking and labeling, organizational and time management strategies, etiquette and social skills, handwriting, telling time, arts and crafts.
2. Mentor and counsel students to promote acceptance of blindness and development of a positive philosophy, serving as a positive role model, demonstrating nonvisual skills.
3. Evaluate the present level of skill possessed by clients to identify attainable goals and areas of needed improvement in order to live independently. Based on the current skill level and identified goals, plan lessons to facilitate skill development and promote independence and self-sufficiency, evaluate progress, and make recommendations for additional skill development after training ends.
4. Educate clients and the public in understanding the various implications of blindness and how this relates to current attitudes toward blindness.
5. Empower NCBVI's clients to obtain their personal, educational, and vocational goals.
6. Follow established procedures for documentation and submit reports to meet deadlines. Refer clients to additional opportunities provided by the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and other social service agencies. Promptly report any issues or concerns to the Center Supervisor.
7. Lead monthly trainings in the techniques of daily living, working collaboratively with the Client Resource Counselor and other Center staff to provide group and individual instruction to Center students.
8. Occasionally substitute for other instructors, teaching Braille, Cane Travel, Technology, or Shop.
9. Participate in community-based activities to role model transferrable skills, promote problem-solving, and learn to cope with the public's misconceptions about blindness.
10. Assists in the training of new staff members in the different philosophies of working with the blind, the implications of being blind and teaching daily living skills to the blind.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in social science, behavioral science, social work, counseling/guidance, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, human development, education or related and two years' experience; OR Master's degree in any of the above-mentioned fields or related area and one year of experience. Maintaining of the CVRCB Certification, once acquired on the job.
Preferred Qualifications: Possess current National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB), National Certification in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind (NCRTB), National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC), or Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Blind (CVRCB), or training/experience at a center approved by the National Blindness Professional Certification Board.
All new hires are required to complete 600 hours of paid immersion training under blindfold at the Nebraska Center for the Blind at NCBVI expense in order to earn the designation of Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Blind (CVRCB).
