Students I supported graduated, and one of them is now successfully and gainfully employed with Airbus Aerospace in Mobile, Alabama. I earned my paycheck, and I proved my worth through outcomes, not just credentials.</span><br><span></span><br><span>My concern is not with certification itself. I understand why it matters. My concern is with a system that increasingly tells blind professionals they must obtain expensive credentials at their own expense, while many employees in larger organizations have certifications paid for by their employers. If agencies, schools, and contractors want these credentials, then they should help build paid pathways to obtain them.</span><br><span></span><br><span>That could include employer-sponsored certification, apprenticeships, provisional hiring with a certification timeline, equivalent-experience pathways, mentorship models, or reimbursement after successful completion.</span><br><span></span><br><span>We should absolutely protect students and maintain professional standards. Personally, as someone who has been in K12 for a decade and in lawsuits and an expert witness in lawsuits. Even credentials as silly as the Jaws certification go a long way in covering you. </span><br><span></span><br><span>I'm not a fan of professionals having to rack up a TBLVL, COMS, and CATIS credentials. However, I would highly recommend for individuals interested in continuing to pursue the field of assistive tech to consider getting their CATIS, Jaws cert, Zoom Text cert, etc. I'm blind myself and it is silly, but administration will find any way to put people like us down. </span><br><span></span><br><span>Lived experience is so important, but when my skills were questioned in a touchy situation. Fifteen years of lived experience being a Jaws user got me nothing. But the larger point, for her and for me, is that certification alone does not seem to be adequate for effective AT teaching; we have to stay on top of the changes in the tech around us and the needs of our students, and only experience (both in and out of the workplace) will do that. </span><br><span></span><br><span>As a final comment, I'm grateful to know that several state agencies are now changing their requirements to include "equivalent experience" as an alternative to certification. this could open the door to opportunities for those of us who have been teaching and working in this field for a while, but don't yet have the letters after our names. For this reason, my small AT training business now consists of myself and 2 subcontractors: a certified TVI, and an AT trainer who is new to the field professionally but has a lot of experience working with blind adults through volunteer projects--just as I did when I started. Incidentally, all 3 of us are blind. I'm hoping this combination of experience will be an asset to a variety of students, educators and government/private agencies. Before anyone asks, we unfortunately can't add any more trainers to our team at this time, as much as I would love to do so. I also have direct experience in higher education administration, accessibility services, training, and supporting blind students and professionals in real-world environments.</span><br><span></span><br><span>That kind of practical knowledge has value, especially when it comes from someone who actually depends on the technology personally rather than only understanding it from a technical or academic standpoint.</span><br><span></span><br><span>I absolutely understand the desire for standards and quality assurance. However, I think organizations may eventually need to reconsider how they approach certification requirements if they truly want to expand the pool of qualified trainers. If certifications are becoming essential to employment, then employers, agencies, school systems, or partnering organizations may need to invest more directly in creating paid pathways, apprenticeships, mentorships, or employer-sponsored certification programs rather than expecting applicants to absorb all of the cost and risk themselves.</span><br><span></span><br><span>Otherwise, we risk excluding highly capable blind professionals who already possess extensive practical expertise simply because they lack a particular credential.</span><br><span></span><br><span>Just my thoughts on the broader issue.
