[Travelandtourism] Suggestions on Ways to Increase Frequent Flyer Miles?

My husband and I use the American Express charge card as much as we can to
increase our frequent flyer miles, and we pay it off at the end of every
month. I have been debating about whether to continue with them, as they do
charge a $150 fee at the beginning of each new year, but we do have some
companion fare certificates that we wouldn't be able to use next year unless
we paid that $150. One thing I really like about American Express is that
they are good advocates for you in case you have been ripped off by a
company, and they have very good travel insurance in case you have lost
luggage, need to return from a trip early, and health insurance too if you
go somewhere out of the U.S.

I am wondering though if it would be better to just look for the lowest
fares, use the travel certificates before our next $150 yearly payment is
due, then just keep using the card simply because they are quite reliable.
They have really lowered their ways to get sky miles. You used to be able
to get two miles for every dollar you spent on gas, medicine, and I think
phone service.

Any thoughts?
Linda
