Hi! THis is Anahit. I do believe you can use the points on AMEX for other purchases. You are right about using up the miles before the end of the year and after that just trying to find a better deal on flights. If you pay it off by the end of the month and use it only to get the miles I would say it is not worth it to pay the fee. SOmetimes you can get a pretty good deal on air now. I would look into airline cards, You can probably find a good one with no fee.

My husband and I use the American Express charge card as much as we can to
increase our frequent flyer miles, and we pay it off at the end of every
month. I have been debating about whether to continue with them, as they do
charge a $150 fee at the beginning of each new year, but we do have some
companion fare certificates that we wouldn't be able to use next year unless
we paid that $150. One thing I really like about American Express is that
they are good advocates for you in case you have been ripped off by a
company, and they have very good travel insurance in case you have lost
luggage, need to return from a trip early, and health insurance too if you
go somewhere out of the U.S.

I am wondering though if it would be better to just look for the lowest
fares, use the travel certificates before our next $150 yearly payment is
due, then just keep using the card simply because they are quite reliable.
They have really lowered their ways to get sky miles. You used to be able
to get two miles for every dollar you spent on gas, medicine, and I think
  phone service.

  Any thoughts?
  Linda

An addition to my last message. I think it is possible to have an American
Express card for no yearly fee, but privileges are greatly reduced.

  Linda:

You most definitely want to use your travel certificates before they expire.
Now to stay with American Express is an individual decision. I have a
frequent flyers credit card with Discover that works much like American
express without the yearly annual fee.
