New rail firm to launch in summer 2011

By: Donna Tunney
June 23, 2010

A new, luxury rail tour provider will begin offering train journeys that
traverse most of the U.S. next summer. Denver-based American Railway
Explorer is being marketed at www.aretrain.com, with daily rates from $900
per person, depending on the itinerary.

The railway firm, a unit of Anschutz Co., owned by billionaire Philip
Anschutz, will operate three-, seven- and 10-night itineraries.

The seven-night Southwest Explorer, for example, will operate between Napa,
Calif., and Santa Fe, N.M. Stops include Yosemite National Park; Santa
Barbara, Calif.; Grand Canyon National Park; Williams, Ariz.; Albuquerque,
N.M.; and Santa Fe.

The Northwest Explorer, also seven nights, will travel between Napa and
Jackson, Wyo., with stops in Crater Lake National Park; Glacier National
Park; Helena, Mont.; Yellowstone National Park; and Grand Teton National
Park.

Cross-country trips also will be offered. The Transcontinental Explorer will
be a 10-night tour operating twice in 2011 between Los Angeles and
Washington, with stops in San Francisco, Sacramento, Denver, Chicago,
Niagara Falls and Shenandoah National Park.

Onboard accommodations will be in 1950s-era vintage railcars that are
undergoing restoration. An executive chef will prepare meals using
sustainable and locally produced ingredients.
