True your credit card Company could intervene for you as well.  However, the morrow of this story is inspect the rental inside and out for any damage.  If you see damage, ask for another rental instead.

  Also another option is to have your credit card company intervien in your
  behalf.  I believe American express will do this for you but assume that
  others will also.  Since you cannot rent a car in the states without a
  credit card.
