I can say from personal experience of using a wheelchair at WaltDisney
World that it is great. I rented one from a third party because I knew
I'd need one and did not want to worry about getting their early
enough to be ensured a wheelchair, but on the last day, we turned in
the wheelchair before going to Animal Kingdom and had no problem
obtaining a wheelchair at the front of the park. So I guess it's an
individual decision.
Not once, though, did I have my wheelchair go 'missing' or have
anything taken from the backpack that was hung on its back. The cast
members kept a close eye on it.
