Need a U.S. passport? The application fee is increasing from $55 to $70.
Planning an international trip? For Americans who still need to obtain a
passport, or renew an existing one, the price is going up.

The application fee for a passport has jumped 27 percent to $70, from $55,
with the passport security surcharge doubling to $40 from $20. (And don't
forget the $25 "execution fee" on top of those costs.)

And for those frequent travelers to parts abroad, the department now charges
$82 - up from zero - to add new pages to a U.S. passport. It says the fee is
needed to offset the cost of the pages, the time spent affixing the pages
into the passport book, endorsing the passport and performing a
quality-control check.

Those are just a few of a long list of fee increases for the department's
consular services that were published Thursday in the Federal Register. The
U.S. State Department said it raised the fees after finding that the "U.S.
Government was not fully covering its costs for providing these consular
services."

To see the list of current fees or to apply for a U.S. passport, visit the
State Department's Passport site.

Of course, you can always avoid all that paperwork and instead visit one of
the 50 states in the good ol' US of A.
