In stead of duct tape which is a good idea, I use hospital bandage tape. Also called silk tape. It is a smaller, packable roll and easier to tear. it also has a high quality of adhesiveness.  found in the first aid sections of stores and pharmacies.

Milton you can use a standard size roll in your package
luggage.

I have duct tape that I can take but it's the standard
size. I've never seen
a real small roll of duct tape. Where would you buy
one?
