> I have a bit of a different perspective on what to do in new places. I don't know anything about Sweden, but I did a lot of travel for work in the past. It was all in the US and most of the time I had no choice in where I went. I might have a day or two in one place, a week in another, and the longest stints were three weeks. Sometimes I did just use the hotel as a home-away-from home and just sleep and watch TV but I generally liked to use the opportunity to have some experience of the place. So this was totally about finding things to do in the place where I was going and not choosing the place based on what I wanted to do. I don't know if this is that sort of trip, but I developed a kkind of formula for working out what to do for what were usually last-minute trips. This is what worked for me, but the idea is good for anyone. Instead of being really specific, like, say, "I want to go hear really good Jazz," I tried for categories. I love even just being by bodies of water, but there is also generally *something* interesting happening whereever there are bodies of water. I like being in motion, and I enjoy local music. Even if the musicians aren't awesome, I enjoy being in small local venues and the spirit of that over large concerts by visiting musicians. So that was my formula. Because if you ask what there is to do, the natural next question is "what do you like to do," and if your answer is "anything new and interesting," it's hard to get anything helpful out of people, and if you are too specific, what you want may not exist or not be a choice for the location. I could easily ask everyone, from flight attendants to a hotel concierge to taxi drivers, about my big three - what bodies of water are around here, and what is there to do on or near it, what forms of transportation are here, and where can I go to hear good local music. Don't be too rigid - of course if something doesn't meet your categories, don't refrain from doing it, but if you can find categories like mine, but that work for you, you are sure to enjoy your time.
> Btw: I know transportation sounds like an odd choice. I generally mean unusual forms of transportation, like the inclines in Pittsburgh or the cable cars in San Francisco, but it can be the top of a double-decker tourist bus, a ferry, or even just the local public transit train. Obviously this is my personal obsession. Yours might be some form of beauty treatment, or some kind of outdoor sporting event, or different kinds of markets, like farmer's markets or flea markets. After I'd been doing this for quite a while, I started looking for local versions of activities I did at home. I did Israeli folk dancing in Atlanta and Contra Dance in Austin and got to hear an excellent Jazz singer in Portland for much less money than I'd have paid to hear them in NYC. Sometimes that sort of activity can take a good amount of research to find, but sometimes it can be easy, like just calling the national headquarters of the organization for whatever it is that you enjoy at home, and sometimes you find something and sometimes you don't. But if you can find your own general formula, you will always at least have that to fall back on.
