[Travelandtourism] Experiences with Airbnb and convention centers

Here are a few thoughts in using Airbnb.

1. Figure out geographically where you want to rent your place. For
example, I live in Chicago and the neighborhood within walking
distance of my local convention center is crummy. However, the
neighborhood just north of it is very safe as well as other
neighborhoods north of it on a subway line that goes by the convention
center. Figure out the specific neighborhoods where you actually want
to rent your Airbnb and confirm with hosts what their nearest
intersection is so you can judge if it is near your convention center
or a bus or train line. Airbnb shows sighted users the approximate
location of rentals and this is not accessible on the site.

2. Search by address and not by city. As you want a rental within
walking distance of your convention center or bus line, use a specific
address so you can find rentals around this address. The properties
are usually listed in distance to the listed address. If a city is
just typed in, properties are often not within walking distance of the
destination location.

3. Confirm with hosts the distance they are from the street or
destination, such as a hotel or venue. Many do not want to give an
address but ask for their nearest intersection so you can judge for
yourself.

4. Keep the 24 hour Airbnb hotline in your phone contacts. Hosts may
cancel at the last minute and the hotline could help you find other
hosts. Also, I know a few blind people who freaked out their hosts by
simply being an independent blind traveler. The hosts cancelled their
reservation because they were nervous something bad would happen. The
Airbnb hotline can help you find another host if this happens and
remove the host from the system. Also, have some hostel apps on your
phone. These are great options for affordable travel and can be relied
on if a host cancels or backs out at the last minute.
