Good Morning
I hope all is well and this email reaches you in good health. I am proud to
introduce the 2017 interns of the Virginia Association of Blind Students.
The individuals selected have demonstrated promise and prowess in
organization, leadership, and drive.
The Virginia Association of Blind Students, a proud division of the National
Federation of the Blind of Virginia, originally consisted of an executive
board made up of 6 positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer,
Secretary, and Board Members 1 and 2). This board currently worked on 2
committees, Fundraising and Communications, which assisted in building our
treasury and social media presence. However, with strides being made in
recruitment and an influx of active students, the board believed that it was
time to create 2 new committees on the student level. These committees,
membership and legislation, are going to be chaired by the 2 board members
of the executive board with the interns being the chairs of the original
committees.
After a very informative and interactive interview process, the intern
selection panel have decided on bringing on three interns for a 4-month term
until convention. These people will be part of the executive board and are
the chairs of their respective committees. Below are the chosen interns:
1. Fundraising Intern: Naim Abu El-Hawa. Hailing from Fairfax County,
VA, Naim displays an excellent combination of tact, work ethic, and
determination. He is a student at Northern Virginia Community College and is
very excited to work with the student division to increase the productivity
and profitability of VABS.
2. Social Media Intern: Naomi O'Toole. Originating from Virginia Beach,
VA, Naomi is a proud member of the Chesapeake Bay chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind of Virginia. She has held various positions in
school organizations, including a publicist job for her local honor society.
Naomi will be operating the VABS Twitter page.
3. Communications Intern: Michael Munn. Originating from Beijing,
China, Michael is a high school student whose dynamic personality and
willingness to work with people makes him a leader in his own right. His
resume includes a range of different leadership positions including mentor,
peer counselor, and even motivational speaker. He currently lives in the
Winchester area, with the Winchester chapter being his local chapter.
Michael will orchestrate the Facebook page for VABS.
These interns are the newest faces of student leadership in the Virginia
affiliate and will be working with the rest of the board on all of efforts
of the division until elections at our business meeting on Saturday,
November 4, 2017 in the Westin Tyson's Corner. It is at our state convention
that these interns will have the opportunity to run for a different
position, the same position, or no position at all. Let's take time to say
congratulations to all the students.
