Subject: Final stretch, help us get HB2541, the Information Technology
Access Act over the last hurdle!
To: Bonnie O'Day <bonnoday at gmail.com>

Thank you very much for participating in the Richmond Seminar and for
meeting with house and senate members. Your efforts bore fruit, in that the
House passed HB2541 with a vote of 98 to 0 last Tuesday. The bill will be
heard by the Senate Committee on General Laws and Technology, probably next
Wednesday. If you met with any of the Senators or their offices below, or
you are a constituent, please call or email their office to encourage
passage of HB 2541 out of committee. Bob Hartt and I will be visiting
Senators on the committee tomorrow, and there is nothing better than
hearing, “Oh yes, I have heard from several people who asked us to support
the bill!” So if you can drop a note or make a phone call today or
tomorrow, that would be fabulous. Otherwise, please do so by next Tuesday
afternoon, February 11.

Here is a draft message you can share. Please feel free to add your own
experiences if you have had difficulty accessing state, local or school
district websites or software. If you are a constituent, please indicate
that in your message.

Dear Senator ___:

My name is ___ and I am a member of the National Federation of the Blind of
Virginia. I met with you on January 21, to discuss HB2541, the Information
Technology Access Act (ITAA). The bill passed the House 98-0 and will be
referred to the Senate Committee on General Laws and Technology. This bill
modernizes the ITAA and conforms with other federal and state laws, such as
the Americans and Virginians with Disabilities Acts. It ensures that state
and local government agencies and school districts will purchase technology
that is accessible to people with disabilities and provides practical
guidance for compliance. Thank you for your support of this important
legislation.
