From suncat0 at gmail.com Wed Sep 4 01:20:14 2013 From: suncat0 at gmail.com (Joe Sontag) Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2013 21:20:14 -0400 Subject: [Vendorsmi] [nfbmi-talk] check out mi attendees to this rs thing References: <4C9D57A5A83B4083A17DD9F6381CDF6F@YOUR7C60552B9E> <9272BA0934E74D1780E7B91DA6EAF411@Reputercat0> Message-ID: It looks as if I've been proven correct once again A well-trained, experienced and motivated operator could do anything that the franchises can do, (except use their names), at the Anderson Building and possibly other facilities in the BEP and do it without all of the added expenses of a franchise relationship. One John McEntee proposed this solution to the rising level of problems with most of our cafeterias way back in the 1990s. Politics shot the idea down back then, just as management by crises and politics is destroying the BSBP today. ----- Original Message ----- From: "joe harcz Comcast" To: "Joe Sontag" ; "NFB of Michigan Internet Mailing List" Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2013 19:42 Subject: Re: [nfbmi-talk] check out mi attendees to this rs thing > By the way this was the conference where Rodgers in the public record said > he got all his wonderful franchising ideas.... > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Joe Sontag" > To: "NFB of Michigan Internet Mailing List" > Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2013 7:26 PM > Subject: Re: [nfbmi-talk] check out mi attendees to this rs thing > > >> They will be in the company of very good and knowledgeable people. The Director of Services to the Blind was unavailable for comment on this story , as a cone of silence descended. An employee of the Michigan House and a state licensing department official declined to talk, too, as they walked into a 2:30 strategy meeting on this issue Thursday. There was one state official who did talk, but not on camera. He points out, Tim Horton products would go into a room on the ground floor of the capitol, but the Tim Horton sign would not. Tim Horton employees would not be running the operation, but they would provide training to the visually impaired who would. However, the Tim Horton sign and products could end up in the House office building, right across the street from coffee shop competitor Biggby. Bob Fish runs the Biggby franchises in the area and was not asked to bid on the project. He is worried that franchisees may have their tax dollars subsidizing Tim Horton. "I don't think its a matter of signage or not signage," said Fish. "All of our Biggby coffees are taxpayers. It would feel a little awkward to us that we are paying our taxes and maybe that project is being subsidized somehow with our dollars. That sounds weird to me." As the licensing department director, Steve Arwood, came to the meeting, he was not very forthcoming on what exactly was unfolding as he walked past our camera. (Reporter) Mr. Director, would you help clarify what you are trying to do. "Discussions are underway and no decision has been made," said Arwood. (Reporter) Do you want to put a franchise in there? "Discussions are underway," replied Arwood. (Reporter) Is the state going to pay a franchise fee? "No decisions have been made, Tim," said Arwood. Finally, if there are no plans for a Tim Horton's franchise, why is Bob Essenberg in Canada now, possibly for up to 7 weeks? Has anyone seen Essenberg around the greater Lansing area lately? If I were that reporter, I'd be trying to speak with Bob Essenberg, the newly hired 17-level Director of the Business Assistance and Development Program (BADP) within the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP). ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Sontag To: VENDORSMI List ; NFBMI List Sent: Thursday, September 05, 2013 20:58 Subject: Paper says "No plans for Tim Horton's," but State officials were reluctant to comment on reports regarding Tim Horton products going into the state capitol. The job posting was scheduled to close Monday at 5 p.m. "Could it be that state officials are trying to cover-up their lies, in which they have been caught with their hand in the coffee bean jar?", questions the anonymous NFB board member. The question arises following statements made by state Licensing and Regulatory Affairs director Steve Arwood, denying that plans exist and are moving ahead to establish a well known foreign company coffee shop franchise in the two state buildings. As Arwood walked past a local television news reporter and camera crew, a cone of silence descended. Reporter) Mr. An employee of the Michigan House and a state licensing department official declined to talk, too, as they walked into a 2:30 strategy meeting on this issue Thursday, as reported by the local news reporter. Arwood's denial that no decisions have been made comes two days after Bob Robertson of the Bureau of Services to Blind people, distributed a memo to the bureau's staff, announcing the civil service posting for the ten student assistant positions to staff the franchise locations at taxpayer expense. The controversy has been a hot topic on media website blogs since the planned Tim Horton's franchise news story was aired on Lansing's WLNS six o'clock news on Tuesday, said the unnamed NFB board member. "It should be abundantly clear to all that Arwood's comments on Thursday, followed by the early pulling of the student assistant position posting, is a deliberate attempt to back-peddle and do damage control, for the failure of state officials to think through the plan, and anticipate reaction to the plan.", added the unnamed NFB board member. The Director of Services to the Blind and Department of Civil Service officials were unavailable for comment on this story because of the weekend. Also unavailable for comment was Robert Essenberg, as he is currently in Canada for Tim Horton franchise training. Essenberg is the newly appointed state division director of the BADP, hired as a civil service employee at a salary in the $100,000 per year range, to oversee operation of the two Tim Horton franchise locations at the Capitol and Anderson House of Representatives office building. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Could Ed Rldgers have been talking about John Scott, or was it Larry Posont when he spoke of a former Commissioner who allegedly served for seven years and who publicly blamed BEP Management for much of the Program's troubles during the previous ten years? You might find the Public Comment period near the end of the meeting rather telling - and not because of anything said by me. Mr. Keathley's pointed remark during the meeting needed addressing; and Keathley's response was most revealing.
