During my years as a licensed Business Enterprise Program cafeteria operator, and an employer of numerous blind persons who were vocational rehabilitation clients of the Michigan Commission for the Blind, I had the honor and privilege of a working partnership with Jim to put blind persons into employment training and meaningful work, and as was the case in those days, put a paycheck in the hip pocket of a blind person. While that was a motto coined by the late Bill Simon, a MCB supervisor, Jim Moore was truly dedicated to achieving that outcome for clients of the vocational rehabilitation program, in his position as an employment placement specialist. As sadly as the passing of Jim Moore, I have serious reservations as to whether blind consumers of vocational rehabilitation services in Michigan will ever encounter the attitude and experience that persons like Jim Moore brought to and lived out that commitment to real employment and independence of Michigan blind citizens of that truly starkly different era in services to blind persons. My thoughts and prayers are with Arlene and the family. The text of his obituary is below. James L. "Jim" Moore, Age 78, of Lansing, MI, passed away March 18, 2014. He was born April 27, 1935, in Detroit, MI, son of Lee and Doris Moore. Jim was a 1955 graduate of the Michigan School for the Blind. He wrestled for his school team and was very proud of playing the clarinet. While at school he met Arlene, his wife of 34 years. He later became a placement man for Michigan Commission for the Blind. Along with his wife Arlene, Jim is survived by his children, Cindy Martin, Cheryl (Douglas) Glaser, James (Jan) Degeneffe and Michael (Kendra) Degeneffe; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine (Donald) Hochstetler; and brothers, Richard Moore and Larry (Patty) Moore. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Sherman Lewis and Robert Moore, and sister Pat Robertson. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 24, 2014, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery in Harbor Springs, MI. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday and 1 hour prior to the service time on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
