FDA Submits Final Vending Calorie-Disclosure Rules To White House

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has forwarded its final
rules regarding calorie labeling for vending machines to the White House
Office of Management and Budget.

With the final version in hand, it is expected that the White House and the
OMB will initiate a 90-day review process before they will begin the formal
issuance and implementation process of the final rules, according to the
National Automatic Merchandising Association.

The content of the final rules and the date of publication are not known at
this time.

NAMA senior vice-president of government affairs Eric Dell said the vending
association still anticipates, as previously projected, that
calorie-disclosure rules for vending machines will be released by the FDA --
along with the final regulations for restaurant menu labeling -- by the end
of 2014.

The regulations, long anticipated by the industry, are included in President
Obama's healthcare overhaul. The FDA issued the proposed nutrition labeling
guidelines in 2011 and planned to have final rules in place by the end of
that year. But it has extended that target several times, most recently
aiming for September 2013.
