Today I was very proud of the work of the National Federation of the Blind
of Michigan. This was not in the way one might usually think. I traveled to
the Matt Clew Butterfly Garden on the campus of the University of Michigan
Dearborn and planted some parsley and lavender. In 2014 during one of our
Sense-sational Adventures in Summer Science programs which was held on the
campus in the Environmental Interpretive Center we built a butterfly garden
where all the plants were etible, fragrant, and identifiable by the
scientists. The plaque with braille and print lettering still reads as
follows;

The Matt Clew Butterfly Garden is sponsored by the National Federation of
the Blind of Michigan in loving memory of Matthew Richard Clew,October 17,
1990-August 24, 2014

Evidence proving that the original purpose of the garden was being fulfilled
was shown by a Black Swallowtail caterpillar crawling on an annis plant
which produces seeds and leaves which smell like black licorice. Hopefully,
this colorful caterpillar will survive to build a chrysalis and emerge as a
beautiful butterfly.
