[Artists-making-art] marketing art

I've bought from Etsy many times, and it has a pretty good representation of artists with disabilities and art and crafts which integrate braille, including jewelry, pictures, and baby blankets. It is possible to build social circles on Etsy, and I've often wished that there was a blind artists community on it, but I'm not sure about all the ways to connect and create communities on the very extensive site.

  Hi Heather and Kendra,

There is an on-line marketplace that a number of my friends have tried and some are even selling from it. It is more craft based than art but it seems to have a pretty broad interpretation of craft. It is Esty and their site is:

  http://www.etsy.com/

An article in the LA Times talks about it at:

  http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jan/01/business/la-fi-etsy-20110101

I will ask around about an on-line marketplace for artwork.

Thanks Kendra. I've had some limited luck just posting photos of the work on Facebook. I also set up an Etzy site. It hasn't been hugely profitable, but I also haven't given it the attention and promotion it needs, so I can't really whine. It is cheap!

I thought about splitting a table at a fair with a friend. I need to get more work in stock though, which with life right now, probably won't be realistic until the spring.

Thanks for the ideas - keep them coming!

Hi Heather, try out the internet. I heard places like Ebay are a good market. State and local fairs are another great way to either show off your work or sell it down the road. Art festables are a great place to show off your work so that you can get a sense of how it will do in the market. They are just some ideas that I got since I worked in the Oregon State Fair and heard about the internet and got a rag rug displayed in a place that normally shows off art instead of crafts this year. I hope that they are a help to you!

I'm also very interested in hearing about how others market or sell their work. Part of my trouble is I never have much in stock at any given time. But, should I manage to build up something, I'd love to find a way to do something constructive with it. I have hung some of my work at local coffee shops, but it never really sells. I thought maybe it was me, but when I spoke to others who have used the same venues, it seems like they also haven't had much luck. At least the artwork isn't just sitting under my bed though! Grin!

                      Hi fellow Artists,
My name is Jeannie, I am a totally blind artist who is trying to find new ways of creating my art. I love working in clay and did love to paint until a year and a half ago when I had to have my eyes removed. Still healing and wanting to find new and exciting ways to share ideas and be able to talk with other artists.
I just turn 50, I have been married 30 years, have 2 kids and 3 grand kids who I call my grandflowers, because their names are Lily, Violet and Magnolia. I am from Lacrosse WI.
                      Nice to meet you all.
                      Sincerely
                      Jeannie Nylander
