[blindkid] Washington DC for 9yo

Hi Tene,

Firstly, let your child know that they have a responsibility to bring
things along to entertain themselves. It will be quite boring quite a
bit of the time and your child needs to plan how they will amuse
themselves.

Choose a backpak that will go everywhere, everyday. Then help your
child select activities to take in the backpack. A couple of good
braille books are my top suggestion. After that, perhaps a game of
solitaire, a game of naughts and crosses and some 3-dimensional
puzzles.
www.futureaids.com
has quite a few puzzles under $10. They also have several small
devices/games that you use to practise making braille letters and
words and/or sentences. Again, not expensive. Their shipping is also
prompt. a note-book and some scissors to use in paper folding and
cutting practice and experiments is also fun.

An MP3 player with some books to listen to. Perhaps you could borrow a
kids quiz and/or puzzle or joke and riddle books from the braille
library as well.

The main thing is that you and your child realise that their will be
lots of time for a bored 9-year-old to use. Plan to take plenty of
things to do to fill it up. Tell your child that it is their own fault
if they get there and are bored for lack of bringing the right things
to do.

Regards,

Subject: [blindkid] Washington DC for 9yo

Hello All,

Need tips on how to make DC (during inauguration) a pleasant trip for
Na'im ( 9yo with ONA/light perception only). We will be doing tours,
parade, and hopefully sitting on the mall listening to the
inauguration. Any suggestions besides plenty of Tylenol or Motrin?

Tene
