Hello Kim:

Great learning experience for the girls. If the speaker system was not working then how did other passengers know when to board? What alternative techniques should the girls have used to insure not to be left behind? I believe your phone call to the airlines should have been to thank them for not forcing assistance upon the girls and insisting they use a wheelchair or escort. These two latter circumstances are more common than you might think.
