[blindkid] Aid in classroom?

My twin boys started ninth grade this year for the first time without an aide. If they need help, they go to the teacher. They had a full time aide until sixth grade.  I added self-advocacy goals into the IEP, and reduced the things the aide did. For seventh the aide helped very little and in eighth,  only did clerical things or helped with equipment.  I suggest asking the teacher for a list of all the things the aide does, and then looking at it to see what you think your son can do on his own. Write self-advocacy goals into the IEP to reflect these things. You can ask him what kinds of things he thinks he can do on his own or what he would like to do for himself as well. He can do it, but sometimes it takes a little nudge to get him there.

Okay, I have a rather long question here.  My son is in 6th grade.  I am trying to figure out ways to "wean" his aid from his classroom.  When I talked to his teachers recently, they all expressed total support of his aid in the classroom.  They would say things like, "I don't know what I would do if she wasn't here.  She does all kids of things for him!"

Okay, I knew that his aid was in classroom part of the time.  I did not realize how much.  What is a good age to get rid of the aid in the classroom.  I mean he needs to be doing these things for himself.  He is a great student, very smart, and everyone is amazed at what he can do.  So I say, he can do more.  He dosen't need an aid to do things for him.  How do we go about slowly taking her away, without totally abandoning him all at once?
