[blindkid] Wii Device Teaches Visually Impaired to WalkwithCanes

Hello everyone,
I've been reading everyone's comments about the WiiCane.  The WiiCane can't replace the 'real thing' - of actually going out into the real world and exploring using the actual long white cane.  However, I enjoy using games for teaching.  This 'may' be a 'fun' activity to do on a very rainy, snowy, or cold day.  It may also be something that can help with socialization - something middle and high school students can use to connect with their peers.  So many times older students, new to using the long white cane, won't do it because of feeling different than their peers.  This 'may' narrow that gap.

That being said, there are techniques that can help one not to veer.
1)  Make sure the cane is extended out from the center of the body - the hand needs to be by the bellybutton.
2)  Have the palm upward.
3)  Use the wrist to move the cane tip from the left and right.
4)  Tap the cane from the left and right as wide as one's shoulders.
5)  The faster one walks - the straighter one will walk.
6)  Practice by walking down a long hallway or sidewalk.
7)  Pay attention to audio and sun cues.

I think if a child or an adult is encouraged to explore the challenge in an
interactive Wii game, it might make learning a lot of fun!
