About Us

kpr is an entire network of free web-based radio channels for kids. The
channels are created through an aggregate of both old and new programming
assembled from a variety of sources in public radio and elsewhere. Music,
news, stories, comedy, lullabies, educational programming and more are
presented in distinct non-commercial programs which serve an audience of
kids aged 0 to 11 and their parents. The common denominators for all of the
programs are a commitment to quality, a love of many cultures, and a
profound respect for the intelligence of children.

and always ad free and commercial free

kpr launched with two 24/7 channels, Lullaby
<http://www.kidspublicradio.org/lullaby.html> and Jabberwocky
<http://www.kidspublicradio.org/jabberwocky.html> in 2008. Our newest
channel is Pipsqueaks <http://www.kidspublicradio.org/kprpipsqueaks.html> ,
which features kids singing. In addition, we have links
<http://www.kidspublicradio.org/links.html> to other web-based radio
programming for kids including streams, podcasts, and archived programs. We
plan on creating more streamed channels as we are able, including live,
community-based programming.

kpr is made for and with children. Stations, parents, and teachers are
encouraged to help kids create programming
<http://www.kidspublicradio.org/makeprograms.html> for use in our streamed
channels and for local and national broadcast as appropriate. Kids can also
participate as artists and writers.

kpris ad-free and commercial free. We are promoted by public radio stations
across the United States. Financial support is provided by individual
donations online. <http://www.kidspublicradio.org/support.html>

Our History

kpr represents several years of work by a stalwart band of volunteer adults
and kids. We knew with the coming of broadband and wifi, children would
finally be able to hear the wealth of music and stories that generations
have created. And just as importantly, they'd be able to create their own
radio and talk to each other worldwide. It was an opportunity that could
not be passed by.

kpr sees itself as part of the public radio family because so many of
public radio's core values are our values, too. We are ad free and
commercial free, and will always be so. We embrace intelligence and a love
of many cultures. We will not talk down to kids or pander to the violence,
commercialism, and hyper-sexualized culture that seems rampant in much of
children's entertainment today.

We let kids be kids.

We were supported originally as a task force at KUSP <http://www.kusp.org> ,
a forward-thinking public station on California's Central Coast. KUSP is
still our first "Buddy <http://www.kidspublicradio.org/buddy.html> " station
and spiritual home, but we have become more independent in terms of support.
All of the funds to support kpr are currently managed through a Central
Coast public charity, Pickleberry Pie.

Our program providers <http://www.kidspublicradio.org/kprproviders2.html>
come from all parts of the globe- children's musicians, storytellers, radio
people, schools, and community groups. We are grateful for their help and
participation in this grand effort.

We have plans- big plans- to create more channels as our funds and time will
allow. We invite you to join us in creating this network, this safe haven
for and with children.
